How to install Wordpress (for beginners)

Wordpress now is one of the most popular CMSs (Content Management System) on the world which are used to develope website. Having been published since 2003, now Wordpress has surpassed other CMSs and become the CMSs used by most websites from blogs to ecommerce sites.

- So what Wordpress can do?

With Wordpress you can build most websites like blogs, news sites, ecommerce sites,... However Wordpress is optimized for developing blogs and news sites instead of ecommerce site therefore if you intend to build ecommerce sites you should use open sources like OpenCart or Magento.

Wordpress is developed by PHP however if you don't have knowledge of programming you can still build a complete website by Wordpress.

In this post i will show you how to install Wordpress on localhost and use available templates in Wordpress's templates collection.

Step 1: Install XAMPP webserver. XAMPP is a webserver software used to run PHP-based websites. Beside XAMPP you have other options like WAMPP server or AppServ or you can also seperately install Apache + MySQL + PJP (commonly used in  Linux and and is called LAMP). You can refer to the article on how to install LAMP.

Step2:  Download Wordpress at http://wordpress.org/latest.zip. After decompressing you will have a folder "wordpress", you can change this folder name to any name provided that the name you set does not have any spaces (you can replace space by _). Next, copy this folder to /XAMPP/htdocts (my path is F/XAMPP/htdocts).

Step 3: Create database (DB). Access to http://localhost/phpmyadmin/ and go to Databases Tab to create DB as the screenshot below. Choose a charset suitable for the language used on your website, mine is utf8_general_ci. Note that ci means case insentive.

Step 4: Install Wordpress. Access to http://localhost/wordpress_folder_name. Mine is http://localhost/ngolongtech). On the first page choose your language.

Step 4: Click Let's go.

Step 5: Type in the information to access your database. Note that Table prefix are the characters which will be added to the beginning of tables's name in your database to increase the database's security.

If your information you typed in is correct, after click Submit we can see this page. Click Run the Install.
Next you need to type in the information including website name, username, administrator password, email used to restore password.
After Wordpress has completed installing. You will see a page like this.
Go to http://localhost/wordpress_folder_name/ to see your website. Mine is http://localhost/ngolongtech/

Step 5: Customize your website appearance (template). Go to http://localhost/wordpress_folder_name/wp-admin to customize your website appearance. Click add new theme. Browse for your favorite theme and click Install button, or click Preview button to see how it looks like.
Then click  activate button to activate the theme template.
Here is our result. Is it simple?  Best of luck!
